Effective organizations are composed of successful teams, and successful teams are composed of skilled team members. In Roles and Responsibilities on Teams participants learn about how teams develop and function. They learn how they can contribute confidently and skillfully to team success in any team role or task accomplishment. The result is greater self-responsibility and cooperation from individual employees, and smoother operations for the organization as a whole.

Course Overview

Participants begin by understanding the definition and purpose of teams. They take a broad look at the criteria for effective teams and how individual team members can contribute or detract from the team's effectiveness.

Information and experiential activities enable participants to understand the stages of team development. All workshop skills and techniques are linked to helping team members work through these stages. This creates a smoother, faster transition to the more productive stages of team development.

Participants assign team roles and responsibilities for all the skill-building simulations in the workshop. They experience the benefit of organizing in this way as they establish ground rules, accomplish problem-solving tasks, and make consensus decisions. Emphasis is placed on both personal and functional responsibility on the team.

Participants learn foundation skills for valuing diversity and having effective interactions, and apply these skills directly to team situations. These include I-statements, active listening, and identifying and adapting to behavioral styles. These skills help participants make clear requests for cooperation, state needs and expectations, and give feedback to each other. Using good communication and interpersonal skills helps team members develop trust and cooperation on the team.

A highlight of this course are the simulations in which "skill-practice teams" use three specific consensus decision-making techniques. These are the critical skills that help teams reach closure and make objective decisions that all team members will support. Team-meeting aids such as agenda, reports, and evaluations are provided to help teams function smoothly and efficiently.
